Description of the Bachelor Program

The six semester curriculum of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in economics and management consists of a sequence of required courses and two seminars to be taken in conjunction with foreign language education. In order to complete the degree program, students must follow the curriculum through the Preparatory and the Core curriculum.

The Introductory Curriculum starts in the winter semester and is designed to instil that “common body of knowledge” deemed necessary to enable students to successfully complete the courses in the advanced core portions of the B.Sc. program. In the Introductory Curriculum students are required to take seven required courses, namely Principles of Economics, Introduction to Management, Mathematics I and II, Statistics I, Financial Accounting, and Introduction to Law. All examinations can be repeated twice only.

In order to be allowed to take any examination of the Core Curriculum, students must before achieve "pass" grades, or better, in six Introductory Curriculum examinations as there are: Principles of Economics, Introduction to Management, Mathematics I, plus three out of the following four subjects: Introduction to Law, Financial Accounting, Statistics I , and Mathematics II.

In the Core Studies Curriculum students are required to take 13 obligatory courses out of three academic subject areas, and pass all examinations pertaining thereto:

(1) Economics: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, Economic Policy;

(2) Management: Management Decision Analysis, Marketing Management, Production Management and Operations Research, Management Accounting, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, International Management, Skills;

(3) Statistics: Statistics II.

In the fifth and sixth semester, students may choose their concentration either in management or in economics by taking the relevant undergraduate seminar and final seminar.

The Bachelor thesis, resulting from the final seminar in management or economics, rounds off the study program. The preparation time for the thesis is two months and starts to run upon registration in the Academic Records Office.

Foreign Language Instruction

Foreign language instruction is a mandatory component of B.Sc. studies and should be successfully completed by the end of the 4th semester. This instruction comprises a total of 24 SWS (in English: WIH [weekly instructional hours]) and is all mandatory curriculum.

First foreign language requirement: Business English instruction, leading to the university certificates UNIcert III (semesters 1 and 2) plus UNIcert IV (semesters 3 and 4), is indispensable for all students in the B.Sc. program, unless they prove equivalent, documentary language proficiency.
Overall credit: 14 ECTS for 14 WIH [weekly instructional hours] through semesters 1 to 4.

Second foreign language requirement: During semesters 1 to 4, B.Sc. students have to successfully complete foreign language courses on UNIcert level in a second language, depending on the current UNIcert course offerings of the University's languages center (French, levels I to III; German, Grundstufe II, Mittelstufe I, Mittelstufe II; Italian, levels I and II; Russian, levels I to IV; Spanish, levels I and II). Education in this second foreign language must be evidenced by obtaining either a UNIcert I, or II, or III, or IV certificate (depending on previous language expertise). Overall credit: 10 ECTS for 10 or more WIH [weekly instructional hours] through semesters 1 to 4.

Foreign students are encouraged to choose German as second foreign language
The successful passing of the Grundstufe II, Mittelstufe I, or Mittelstufe II proficiency examinations must be evidenced at the time the student registers for his/her last Bachelor examination.
